Check whether your business needs one.
The confirmation email can feel like the finish line
Suppose you register an LLC for a home bakery. The approval arrives, you save the document, and it feels official. The next question is still open: what food, home-business or local permits apply to the products you want to sell and the place you will make them? The LLC approval cannot answer that.
The SBA lists choosing a structure, registering a business and obtaining licenses and permits as separate startup steps. They solve different problems. Treating them as one step is how an impressive folder of paperwork can still be missing the one thing an agency asks for. (SBA: launch your business; SBA: licenses and permits)
Four documents people often mix together
Start by identifying which question a document answers. A tax number, a business name and permission to do a job are not interchangeable. (SBA: launch your business; IRS: employer identification numbers; SBA: licenses and permits)
| Record | What it is for | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| LLC formation record | Establishes the legal entity under state law. | Ongoing entity filings and the structure suitable for your circumstances. |
| Business license or permit | Authorizes an activity under a particular agency’s rules. | Covered work, location, conditions and any renewal date. |
| EIN | Identifies a business or other entity for federal tax administration. | Whether you need one and which entity should apply. |
| Trade name or DBA registration | Records a name used by the business where required. | The local naming rule; it does not itself create an LLC. |
Ask about the work you will actually do
A licensing office needs specifics. Say where you will work, what you will sell and how you will provide it. 'I am starting a business' is much harder to answer than 'I want to sell these baked goods from my home and at a weekly market.'
The SBA says licensing requirements and fees vary with business activity, location and the issuing agency. Some licenses need renewal. There is no reliable nationwide price or one-size-fits-all renewal interval to put in a business plan. (SBA: licenses and permits)
Choose the order from the requirements
If you decide to form an LLC, the IRS says to establish the entity with the state before applying for its EIN. That does not mean everyone must form an LLC, or that every permit requires an EIN. Read the application for the actual license before deciding what depends on what. (IRS: employer identification numbers)
Write down an unanswered requirement as a question with an office to contact. Once it is answered, save the source, the issuing agency and any next action. It is fine for a checklist to contain a question. It is less useful when the question quietly becomes a guess.
Keep the next date with the document
An annual report, a license renewal and an insurance renewal can all have different schedules. Keep the actual date with the relevant record, and add enough preparation time to collect what the agency or provider needs.
BizzyBot can hold the dates, responsible people and notes you enter. It does not discover permits, submit applications or pay fees. For ordinary deadline events, opening the calendar and Due today is how you see the work that is coming up.

Questions & answers
Do I need a business license if I have an LLC?
You still need any license or permit required for your work and location. LLC formation does not replace it. Whether a general business license is required depends on the jurisdiction.
Can a sole proprietor get a business license?
Yes. An LLC is not a universal prerequisite. Follow the licensing agency’s application requirements for your structure.
Should I form an LLC before getting an EIN?
If you are forming an LLC, the IRS says to establish the entity with the state before applying for its EIN. First decide whether that structure is appropriate for you.
How much will the license cost?
Use the fee schedule from the office issuing the actual license. Fees and renewal rules vary; a nationwide price range is not a dependable budget.
Is an EIN a business license?
No. An EIN is a federal tax identification number. It does not authorize a particular trade or location.
Will BizzyBot find the permits I need?
No. Confirm requirements with the issuing agencies or a qualified adviser. BizzyBot helps you keep the resulting tasks, dates and records together.

Starting out or already juggling customers, jobs and a calendar that won't sit still? Keep the details together so your head doesn't have to hold every last one.
What's the difference between owners, teammates and light users?
Owner: $12/month. The person who runs the business workspace, manages billing and decides who gets access.
Teammates: $6 per person, per month. They create or change projects, tasks, schedules and events, and use the calendars. Their permissions decide what they can change.
Light users: $0 per person, per month. They can view schedules and the jobs they're assigned to in the owner's workspace. People who edit that work need a teammate seat.
